Sam Perkin

Sam Perkin is currently studying at Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique de Lyon (CNSMDL). He holds a B.Mus. and MA in Composition from CIT Cork School of Music, specializing in strict counterpoint, orchestration, harmony, analysis, and compositional techniques with Séamas de Barra and C.S.L. Parker. He achieved the top mark for both degrees, and for his MA was awarded ‘HETAC Student of the Year Prize for the Most Outstanding Student in CIT’.

He has received commissions from Cork Orchestral Society (String Quartet – for The RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet – broadcast nationally on RTÉ lyric fm), Cork City Council Arts Office (Flute and Piano Sonata – for Sabine Ducrot/Michael Joyce and Nine Snapshots for Violin and Piano – for Ruxandra Colan-Petcu/Gabriela Mayer), Voci Nuove (Spectrum for Choir – Sung at the 2013 Cork International Choral Festival), and The Irish Association of Youth Orchestras/The Arts Council (Inspirit for Strings – for 2013 ConCorda Chamber Music Course for Strings). His compositions have also received performances by Crash Ensemble and Chamber Choir Ireland, and his work Motor Cortex has been performed in Lyon and Bologna. He has written ‘Dreaming in Sign Language’, which was commissioned by IAYO for the Festival Orchestra at the 20th Festival, of which you can download the full score here.

He wrote Prelude and Fugue for Violin and Marimba (for Eoin Ducrot/Alex Petcu) and A Collection of Dreams for Horn and Piano (for Conor Palliser) especially for Alex Petcu’s Cork New Music Ensemble. His work Violin Concerto No. 2 “Voice” (Soloist – Eoin Ducrot – with orchestra and audience humming at the end) received three performances in 2012. He has recently received a commission to write a piece for the Irish Chamber Orchestra for 2015, funded by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
